Reflection and Progress

2024 was a good year for TULIPS, marked by significant milestones and progress in our mission towards more sustainable airports. Thank you for being part of our journey!

UPDATE #5

Flashback to the TULIPS Progress Event in Turin

The clean energy transition was central to our TULIPS Progress Event in October 2024. At the Castello del Valentino in Turin, homebase of TULIPS partner Politecnico di Torino, we met with partners and stakeholders and shared preliminary results of our demos on modelling, smart grids, innovative energy storage, hydrogen and electric infrastructure and - ground equipment. Did you miss our event? You can now watch the videos of the presentations on our website.

Looking back on the 2nd Hydrogen Airports Conference

The 2nd Hydrogen Airports Conference, co-organised by ACI EUROPE, To70, and TULIPS, and hosted by Torino Airport, brought together key players from the aviation sector to explore the significant role of hydrogen technology in decarbonising airports and aviation. Interested in learning about hydrogen-powered solutions and infrastructure for airports? We are working on a more in depth report on the findings and outcomes of the discussions which we will share on our website.

Circular construction at Schiphol: Enabling Reuse with a Materials Marketplace

You might not expect it, but construction materials form a significant waste stream at an airport like Schiphol. Or rather, a stream of resources, as TULIPS Work Package 6 views it. Applying circular economy practices with construction materials therefore makes sense, as these are accountable for almost 40% of global CO2 emissions. Schiphol, Excess Materials Exchange (EME) and Heijmans have taken the first steps in filling a materials marketplace for Schiphol, to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. The first 100 items have been uploaded and claimed for reuse.

TULIPS Takes the Stage at the Seas to Skies Conference

Five EU green deal projects for airports (OLGA, Stargate and TULIPS) and ports (PIONEERS and MAGPIE) joined forces at the Seas to Skies conference to exchange on results, innovations and challenges ahead. The crosslinks between initiatives underscore the potential for enhanced synergy, laying a promising foundation to scale solutions.

Brussels Airport tests autonomous shuttle on tarmac

In November 2024, Brussels Airport launched a pilot project to test the use of an electric, self-driving shuttle at the airport— a first for Belgium. The shuttle operates entirely autonomously, transporting airport employees across the tarmac for a three-month trial period. This pilot project is part of the European Stargate initiative, one of TULIPS’ sister projects. It marks a significant step forward in advancing innovative and sustainable mobility solutions at the airport.
