TULIPS tests water screen to mitigate ultrafine particles
|
|
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is working hard to reduce the amount of ultrafine particles on the apron and in the surrounding area. For instance, through the electrification of ground handling equipment. But the airport also goes off the beaten track with experimental research and to learn from solutions in other sectors that have potential for airports. One of those possible solutions is to use water droplets to remove ultrafine particles from the air. As part of the TULIPS programme, Schiphol and NLR therefore conducted a trial with an innovative water screen.

Electric charging infrastructure at Rotterdam Airport put into operation
|
|
Because electric flying is new, a person must always physically supervise the charging process for safety reasons. That’s inconvenient, because charging may take a few hours. The TULIPS programme wants to show how you can safely monitor the charging with the help of smart software, data sharing and camera images. This test is planned for next spring. As a first step the Pipistrel Velis Electro arrived at RTHA last August for the official commissioning of the new electric charging infrastructure.

Sustainable land use by carbon sequestration at Schiphol
|
|
In October, the TULIPS’ Work Package 7 team started its latest field experiment. On a piece of agricultural land next to the Polderbaan, biochar has been incorporated into the land. It is the third and final location where the team is testing whether we can increase CO2 storage in the ground for a longer period of time by adding biochar to soil. Over the course of two years, we will take samples from the land to keep track of the effects and assess the benefits. If the results are positive, we can scale-up this method to contribute to the decarbonisation of airports.

The role of aviation in green transport corridors in Europe
|
|
Airports are often the entry and exit points of the EU. What then could their contribution be to the green transport corridors in Europe? During the eMago kick-off conference in December, TULIPS and other H2020 projects discussed this and possible cross-fertilisation.

Stargate's commitment to increasing the use of SAF
|
|
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a key solution to reduce the environmental impact of air travel. By systematically increasing the SAF percentage the EU hopes to reduce CO₂ emissions by roughly two-thirds by 2050. Like TULIPS, our H2020 sister programme Stargate is committed to increasing the use of SAF. But how is SAF made and how does this process work?

The challenges of electric trucks in the first and last cargo mile
|
|
Cargo is an important component at many airports. In order to reduce the CO2 emissions of the cargo chain, Bos Logistics took their first electric truck into operation. Using it for the first and last mile, Bos will make an inventory of how an electric truck performs compared to trucks with other fuels when it comes to environmental, social and energy impact. Their aim: accelerate the implementation and innovation of sustainable technologies and reduce emissions at airports.
