TULIPS is a broad research and innovation programme that drives sustainability in aviation, supported by the EU with €25 million in funding. With this TULIPS UPDATE, we would like to keep you posted on developments concerning the 17 demonstrations we are working on.

Innovative Iron Flow Battery to be tested at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

The switch to zero emission ground handling equipment brings new challenges for the airport operation. How do you charge them at remote locations where the capacity of the electrical grid is insufficient? And how can this grid cope with the ever-increasing demand? An energy storage system could be a solution for this, such as an Iron Flow Battery. Thanks to TULIPS and with the support of the EU, one of these innovative and sustainable batteries arrived at Schiphol recently. We are currently preparing the first tests that will take place at the AB-platform as of August.

Can biochar help in decarbonising airports?

Last year, Torino Airport started using biocharcoal at one location near the airport. Following Torino Airport, Larnaca Airport in Cyprus also started using it and soon biocharcoal will also be applied at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. But what is biocharcoal? It is a product we have probably all used, namely on our barbeque! The biocharcoal is used to capture more CO2 in the soil, and for a longer period. Therefore, we want to know whether it can be used across all airports in the EU. Airports usually have a lot of green land, which potentially can be used for these types of projects to capture CO2. It may also make for a richer harvest and retain water. But before we can start adopting biochar, we need to explore its properties by measuring the impact and assess the results of the biocharcoal.

Spotting the ‘big five’ at our airport waste safari

How do we reduce waste at airports substantially? And how do we ensure that the waste we collect can be properly recycled? First we need to know how much waste we currently have, what the waste streams consist of and to what extent our partners and passengers manage to separate waste. To investigate this, we planned an adventurous waste safari in the underbelly of our airports (Avinor Oslo and Schiphol) to look for our ‘big five’. Spoiler: the coffee cup is our number one; we found it in every waste bin.

Your urgent questions about SAF answered

SAF or Sustainable Aviation Fuel will play an important role in making aviation more sustainable, in the short- and long term. That was one of the main conclusions of the Greener Flight session during the TULIPS launch event last year. During this session we received mutiple questions. Unfortunately, we weren't able to answer them in the available time. Questions like, what makes sustainable aviation fuel sustainable? Does SAF require fewer adaptations to infrastructure? And how can we scale up the supply? We promised to come back to you and so we’re addressing them here.

Two new TULIPS partners in green and connected trucking

Trucks come and go around airports. In order to reach zero emissions as airports, the entire logistics chain should become more sustainable. Transport companies such as DJMiddelkoop and Bos Logistics from the Schiphol area are already taking steps in this direction. Both companies recently joined the TULIPS consortium with the aim of testing three e-trucks in their regular aircargo operations for a year. The use of heavy electric trucks still has its challenges, such as the combination of logistics planning and charging strategies of the battery, given the limited range of electric vehicles and limited availability of charging infrastructure. Within TULIPS we plan to retrieve a lot of data, identify issues and propose solutions.

TULIPS joins Green Airports side event at Paris Air Show 2023

There are several pathways towards zero emission airports and aviation, each with its own challenges. To give some insights into the solutions we are working on, we joined EU Green Deal Projects OLGA and Stargate for a side event at the Paris Air Show in June. We discussed, among other things, the challenges in scaling up sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and the use of hydrogen. We are glad that CINEA took part and that partners SkyNRG and Air France could join us in the panel for their point of view, adding to a fruitful discussion.
