On 26 August 2026, TULIPS partners will showcase the first application of liquid hydrogen on airport premises during the HYDRA II demonstration at Rotterdam The Hague Airport.
The demonstration builds on a major milestone achieved by NLR in August 2025, when the HYDRA II drone completed the first successful flight in the Netherlands powered by liquid hydrogen. Using a hydrogen fuel cell to generate electricity for its electric motors, supported by a battery during flight, the drone demonstrated the safe and effective use of liquid hydrogen in aviation.
Now, the TULIPS programme is taking the next step. During the event, participants will gain first-hand insight into the liquid hydrogen value chain for aviation, from production and delivery to storage, handling and operational use at an airport. The demonstration highlights how hydrogen technologies can support the transition towards more sustainable aviation and help prepare airports for future hydrogen-powered operations.
