Torino Airport’s February Highlights: TULIPS’ Visibility and Policy Impact

February 2025

February was a bustling month for Torino Airport, highlighting both Torino’s and TULIPS’ technical advancements. But more important was that the TULIPS initiative gained significant recognition at local and national policy levels through various events and conferences. We are espcially proud that our hydrogen GPU (hGPU) has officially been featured in the Italian Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC – Ente Nazionale per l’Aviazione Civile)‘s national guidelines for hydrogen in airport logistics.

Assaeroporti-organised Airport Day

On February 5, 2025, Torino Airport participated in the Assaeroporti-organised Airport Day. The event featured the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport and aviation industry representatives. Italian airports discussed the aviation sector’s role in economic development and sustainability. Torino Airport emphasized the impact of the TULIPS project and showcased its environmental sustainability initiatives, including the CINEA-funded TULIPS hydrogen power plant.

Automating and Testing Fair

On February 13, Lorenzo Gusman, COO of Torino Airport, joined a roundtable at the Automating and Testing fair. Major players in the Italian aerospace industry discussed innovation and sustainability in aviation, highlighting new technologies and methodologies for a sustainable future.

Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking Conference

On February 24, Lorenzo Gusman delivered a speech at the Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking conference in the Piemonte Region. The conference celebrated the Memorandum of Cooperation for environmental sustainability. Torino Airport highlighted its role in the TULIPS project as an example of sustainable airport operations and its efforts to accommodate emerging technologies.

ENAC’s Guidelines for Hydrogen Technology: A Milestone for TULIPS

Last but certainly not least: on February 26, during the launch of the initiative “The Italian system for reconciling air transport with the environment,” ENAC introduced guidelines to improve energy efficiency in airport infrastructures. These guidelines promote renewable energy sources and the integration of hydrogen technology in airport supply chains. The TULIPS project was specifically highlighted for its role in standardizing hydrogen usage in ground handling activities. ENAC has recognized H2-GPUs as a viable, lower-emission alternative to conventional diesel-powered models. Highlighting our demonstrations at Schiphol and Turin airports, the guidelines emphasise the H2-GPUs’ seamless integration into airport environments thanks to their similar dimensions to traditional GPU and ability to directly connect to existing airport power infrastructure.
