On 18 April 2024 the TULIPS project will be privileged to host a STUDIO on “Zero Waste Airports” at this year’s World Circular Economy Forum. The event is understood as the world’s leading event for circular economy thinkers, doers and leaders organized by Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund, with international partners. The circular challenge for airports
As concerns about polluting side effect of air travel increase, airport operators are starting to integrate principles of circular economy to reduce waste, emissions and extend product lifetimes. Yet standards and procedures are still very fragmented and it is hard for airport operators to judge the impact of processes modifications in this direction.
How to start with measuring?
Still it becomes visible, that the transition has started. It is to this result in circular economy principles being naturally integrated in airport operations in Europe and beyond. To provide a larger picture on the progress of CE in airport operations and to facilitate stakeholders with overcoming the initial implementation gap, the TULIPS WCEF Studio will provide tools and present a methodology on how to systematically analyse resource streams, treatment and environmental impact, taking into consideration relevant stakeholders.
Practical circular tools to empower airports
The methodology presented is currently tested and validated at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Avinor Airport in Oslo and Hermes Airport in Larnaca and should include inspiring information for other airports and their local waste strategies. Participants can benefit from access to practical tools and valuable insights that aim to empower airports to seamlessly integrate circular principles into their operations.
