TULIPS accelerates the implementation of innovative and more sustainable technologies to reduce emissions at airports.
TULIPS is a consortium led by Schiphol dedicated to developing innovations that facilitate the transition to low-carbon mobility and enhance sustainability at airports over the next four years. Supported by €25 million in EU funding, the TULIPS project began in January 2022 and will continue until December 2026. The consortium aims to accelerate the roll-out of sustainable technologies in aviation, significantly contributing to zero-emissions and zero-waste airports by 2030 and climate-neutral aviation by 2050. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is lighthouse airport and will serve as the proving ground for 17 demonstrator projects resulting from this collaboration.

Rotterdam The Hague Airport and research institute NLR, together with partners in the European TULIPS programme, carried out a drone flight powered by liquid hydrogen on 26 August 2026. This marks the first demonstration in the Netherlands of a liquid hydrogen application at an operational airport.

During the ACI EUROPE Annual Congress & General Assembly in Prague, the three EU Green Airport projects — TULIPS, OLGA and STARGATE — brought together over 40 senior leaders for a focused breakfast session discussion. With participants including CEOs, airport representatives and sustainability leads, the session provided a valuable opportunity to exchange views on the aviation sector’s role in delivering on the European Green Deal ambition to drastically reduce transport emissions.
